Landform design case histories

Landform design

From soft tailings, to a stable landform graded cap, to a productive ecosystem.

Suncor Pond 1 / Wapisiw Lookout

Wapisiw Lookout is the first tailings pond in the oil sands region of Northeastern Alberta (Canada) to be reclaimed. Used as a tailings pond from 1967 to 2008, it is now reclaimed to wildlife habitat. BGC Engineering was the lead designer in this work, and worked closely with Suncor Energy operations and technical staff, several contractors, and several other consultants to reclaim the 220ha ( 544 acres 2.2 square kilometer) site. The opening celebration made national news.
